Dental Implant

What are Dental Implants?

A dental implant is a piece of metal that resembles a screw. It is placed in the jaw where the roots of the missing tooth are located. Over time, the bone grows around the implant and helps keep it in place. An artificial tooth or crown is then attached to the metal to fill the gap left by the missing tooth. The crown is specially prepared to resemble your other teeth in terms of size, shape and color. Dental implants can also be used to hold a dental bridge or dentures in place.

When a dental implant may be required?

If you have one or more missing teeth, a dental implant may be an option to replace missing teeth. In general, the dental implant may be suitable if:

You have a fully grown, healthy jawbone

You do not have gum disease

You do not have a conditions affecting bone healing

What happens during dental implant treatment?

A dental implant is usually performed for several months with a series of minor surgeries and tests. Prior to a thorough examination, you should have x-rays and scan images. You will undergo minor surgery to place the dental implant into your jawbone. Anesthesia is usually applied to avoid pain during surgery. The bone is expected to grow around the dental implant for several months, and then an oral mold is taken to prepare artificial teeth to be fixed to the implant.

What to expect after a dental implant?

After any minor surgery, there may be bruising, pain and swelling in your gums and face. There may also be bleeding in the gums. You may need to eat soft foods to improve the dental implant site. The dental implant does not require special care. It is recommended that you keep your teeth clean by brushing and flossing and have regular dental examinations.Having missing teeth can affect the way you eat and speak, as well as your self-confidence. Dental implant treatment is a long-term solution for replacing missing teeth. The implants are placed directly onto the jawbone, which provides an artificial location for the missing tooth or the root of your tooth. A dental implant application is placed directly onto your jawbone and titanium screws are used to replace the missing tooth root. Once applied, the bone surrounding the implant will slowly fuse in place, keeping the implant firmly in place. Dental implant treatment  can be applied to a single tooth or multiple teeth. It is possible to insert several implants during the same treatment session. Dental implants can be completed  in a single day if you have few or no teeth.

Benefits of Dental Implant Application

When people have missing teeth, it is normal for them to feel uncomfortable. With implant treatment, you can regain your confidence and have a beautiful smile. One of the reasons people choose implant is because they are a more permanent option than prostheses. As long as you take care of dental implants properly, they can last as long as natural teeth. Dentures have a life of about five to 10 years. Because they are tailor made to fit your mouth, they may become uncomfortable as your mouth changes over time.If you want to avoid damaging your existing teeth, dental implant applications are a good option. People may choose to have a bridge because in some cases it is less complicated than implants. The most obvious implant benefits are:

  • Ability to chew and speak correctly

  • Restoration of facial aesthetics

  • Preservation of the remaining jaw bone

  • Restoration of the natural appearance and function of teeth

How is a Dental Implant Application done?

Dental implants are usually attached during two separate procedures; the first is the placement of the implant itself on the jawbone, and the second is the placement of the new tooth on the implant a few months later. Full recovery can take 5-6 months. However, the patient can use his / her teeth actively during this time. Materials used in implant treatment are durable and can be used for a long time. Dental implants are titanium screws that replace the tooth root. It is screwed into the bone under the gum. After the implant integrates with the patient’s bone, the artificial tooth is screwed onto the implant. In addition to crowns, an implant can be used to support fixed bridges, fixed dentures or removable dentures.Implants are the ideal solution for many situations where a single tooth, several teeth, or all teeth are missing. Fixed tooth restoration is possible even for large gaps in the teeth using implants. Dental implants can be used at any age.

Why Implants Are The Best Alternative?

Bone is a vital or living system. This means that when there is no pressure from biting, the bone slowly disappears (atrophies). An implant has a great effect because it prevents this loss: it exercises the jaw bone. This helps protect the bone and gums in the long term.Restoration with implants allows your mouth to feel completely natural. Implants offer the highest comfort even with fixed or removable dentures: The restoration sits gently in the gum and can be easily cleaned and maintained. Each implant treatment consists of five steps – regardless of whether only one tooth needs to be replaced or whether extensive restoration is required:

Your dentist will assess your initial condition to determine the right treatment. Individual case planning is based on:

  • X-ray images

  • Panoramic x-ray images (orthopantomogram)

  • Modeling

  • Specific functional tests as required

  • Computed tomography

  • For successful long-term implant treatment, the following preliminary treatments may be necessary, depending on the situation:

  • Elimination of caries or gum plaques

  • Orthodontic tooth correction

  • Bone growth

The first connection is made to the bone known as the first stability. Increased bone cell are added to the implant surface during the healing phase. This process is called osseointegration.

Modern anesthetics and implantation methods nowadays make the treatment as comfortable as possible. The time required depends on the number of implants and the individual situation. Once the dental implant is inserted, it will take several months for the bone cells to merge with the implant and heal. Meanwhile, your new teeth will be produced. After the implants are fully inserted, the artificial teeth are placed on the screws and the treatment is completed.
